With the new Material Theme Editor, you can change one theme value, and it cascades throughout your design. It’s essentially a control panel that lets you apply global style changes to component color, typography, and shape. The editor also guides you through the process of making your own Material theme, with even more customizable systems in the works for release later this year.

In the Material Symbols Library, all icons are in the Vector Drawable format. Tolearn more, check out theAndroid Vector Asset Studio documentation. Thegit repository contains the complete set of Material Symbols in SVG format.

But that’s where Material’s new killer feature comes in—Material Theming lets anyone systematically express their unique style across a product. When you make just a few decisions about color and typography, for example, it’s simple to apply the direction consistently throughout the environment. Google’s already using a custom Material theme, and now anyone can create their own stylized flavor of Material. Read on for a rundown of the most powerful new Material features and how they can help you and your team.

The "master" branch includes few custom icons as well as fixed icons that were slightly modified (such as "outline" icon being changed to have the outline). The system will continue to expand and roll out new features in the coming months, so stay tuned. Learn how variable font technology can be used for typography and now for icons, with our launch of Material Symbols. Available under Apache License 2.0, symbols are offered in three styles (outlined, rounded, and sharp) with the ability to adjust fill, weight, grade, and optical size.

For RTL languages, UIs should be mirrored to display most elements in RTL. When a user interface is mirrored for RTL, some of the icons should also be mirrored. When text, layout, and iconography are mirrored to support right-to-left UIs, anything that relates to time should be depicted as moving from right to left. For example, forward points to the left, and backwards points to the right. However, be mindful that the context in which the icon is placed also influences whether an icon should be mirrored or not.

If you want to add icons to the master branch, you need to sign Google's Contributor License Agreement. Maybe one day these icons will be merged into the official repository. Google’s open-source system for designing and developing beautiful, usable products. Weight defines the symbol’s stroke weight, with a range of weights between thin (100) and bold (700). To convey a state transition, use the fill axis for animation or interaction.
Accordion folded material elements are adjoined by a connecting fold, used to add dimension to a single material element. Folded material elements are skewed, having greater dimension. Spot colors should be avoided, so as to avoid altering or misrepresenting key elements. Each color reacts differently when tints and shades are added. The color of every edge tint, edge shade, and shadow needs to be adjusted for each color that lies behind it.

Optical size offers a way to automaticallyadjust the stroke weight when you increase or decrease the symbol size. By default, images' semantic content is set to unspecified. If you do not want an icon to ever be mirrored, you need to explicitly set it to be forceLeftToRight. Apple calls out some exceptions that should not be mirrored, such as media playback (Fast Forward, rewind, etc.), musical notes, images indicating the passage of time, etc.

All edge distances are measured from an element's interior edge. The left, right, and bottom edges do not have a tint applied. The left, right, and top edges do not have a shade applied. Material Symbols are our newest icons, consolidating over 2,500 glyphs in asingle font file with a wide range of design variants.
The "original" branch includes only icons from material.io with some bug fixes. Material IconsHave you ever tried to customize hundreds of icons? Unique system icons can add polish and expression to a digital product, but painstakingly crafting each individual symbol is also a lot of work. From day one, Material's ready-to-download icons have been extremely popular with product teams looking for an elegant off-the-shelf solution. Material Icons are available in five different themes, so you can choose from baseline, rounded, sharp, outlined, and two-tone styles.
The styles below make it easy to apply our recommended sizes, colors, and activity states. In both the material icons library and git repository, these icons are packaged up in Xcode imagesets which will work easily with Xcode Asset Catalogs (xcassets). These imagesets can be added to any Xcode Asset Catalogs by dragging them into Xcode on to the asset catalog or by copying the folder into the xcasset folder. Find both the icon names and codepoints on the material icons library by selecting any icon and opening the icon font panel. Each icon font has a codepoints index in our git repository showing the complete set of names and character codes (here).
For now, Material Theme Editor integrates only with Sketch, and you can access it by downloading the Material Plugin. In addition to introducing a new logo last year, Google Fonts added support for open source icons. Google’s Material Symbols are now available leveraging variable font technology. Read the developer guide on how to use the material design icons in your project. Shaded edges apply dark bottom edges to elements (the left, right, and top edges are not shaded). 2dp of padding must surround the live area, making the total icon size 48dp.
